Lip Augmentation

Thinning lips, or an asymmetric lip line, are most often the result of genetics; however, as we age we also lose natural volume in this area – which can lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles around the mouth, while contributing to slackening of the lower-face. As a result of popular culture, the influence of celebrities and even social media, lip augmentation has increased dramatically; however lip volumisation should still be carefully considered, and performed in a way that complements your facial features.

How Does It Work?

A patient before and after treatment at McKeown Medical.

What can help?

The gold-standard treatment for adding volume to thinning lips is the use of dermal filler. Many women are nervous about lip filler, for fear that the end result may look overly conspicuous or inflate the lips to extreme proportions. However at McKeown Medical we advocate only the most subtle lip enhancement and believe that the best treatment should be truly undetectable.

For the best results - experience is key

Lips are one of the most technically challenging areas of the face to inject dermal fillers into and get right. Just the right amount of the right product has to be injected into a very precise tissue plane to create a look that is natural and harmonious.

The challenge is that the result needs to look good not only when the face is at rest, but when the face is moving too. It takes a lot of experience to be able to get this balance just right.

The team at McKeown Medical are amongst the most experienced filler practitioners in the United Kingdom. Administering thousands of treatments in Glasgow every year our team are experts in techniques that give you effective, natural-looking results.

Recovery & Aftercare

When it comes to fillers, lip treatments are extremely popular because they are so easy and safe. Our lip filler treatment is safe and done by professional cosmetic practitioners who are highly trained in the art of injecting fillers into the lips.

The lips are, however, the most sensitive area of the face to inject and typically swell up more than any other part of the face, so it is best to schedule your lip filler appointment when you have a few days with not much on. This procedure is ideal to have on a Friday so that most of the swelling will have settled by the Monday.

Whilst most of the initial swelling will go down in a few days, it can take up to a fortnight for everything to completely settle into place.

Common Questions

What are Lip Fillers Exactly?

Injectables for lips are a popular non-surgical treatment for restoring volume and shape to the lips because they are safe and, when done properly, offer natural-looking results. A lip filler treatment is a great way to add volume to the lips and mouth area and enhance the overall appearance of the face without having to go under the knife.

Lip fillers are typically made up of hyaluronic acid, a structural molecule that occurs naturally in the skin and connective tissue. When hyaluronic acid is injected into the lips it attracts water adding soft volume, giving the lips a fuller appearance.

How Long Do Injections Last?

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm are quick to administer and the results often last a long time – 18 months being the average time between treatments in our practice.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with lip fillers is to underestimate how long it lasts. It’s possible to get used to the way the filler looks and forget what you looked like before, think the volume is gone and then want to go back for more. This leads to a build-up of product in the lip and gradual overcorrection. Don’t fall victim to this.

The time to repeat lip filler is when the lips have deflated close to the pre-treatment size.

What Are The Benefits of Lip Fillers?

Although lip fillers are synonymous with adding volume to the lips, other benefits include:

• Improving asymmetrical lips

• Adding natural-looking fullness

• Reduces the appearance of fine lines on the lips and surrounding mouth area

• Customisable based on your expectations

• Offers temporary results

Lip plumping injectables are a popular treatment for lips because they are relatively quick and easy, but also because they are temporary. A typical treatment takes just 15 minutes to perform and you can resume normal activities immediately, although you might want to avoid social situations until the swelling has a chance to resolve.
