Laser eye lift

The laser eye lift is a procedure that significantly rejuvenates the eyelids, without any cutting involved or scars. The procedure involves using a laser to remove the outer layers of skin, taking away any fine lines or crepeyness around the eyes. The procedure is also often combined with volume restoration below the eye to improve the result, diminishing the appearance of bags whilst creating a smoother, more even eyelid appearance.

How Does It Work?

A patient before and after laser eye lift treatment at McKeown Medical.

What can help?

The laser eye lift procedure works by removing the outer layers of the skin, to regenerate fresh new skin that is usually devoid of lines and wrinkles as well as tighter. The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, similar to the injections at the dentist. After the numbing injections are performed, we insert some metal contact lenses under the eyelids to protect your eye from the laser. This sounds uncomfortable, but is completely painless (we use some numbing eyedrops first so you don’t feel it). When we are fully prepared, the laser is then passed over the eyelid a couple of times until we have achieved the desired amount of wrinkle reduction and skin tightening. The eye shields are then removed and you are free to go home.

Is a laser eye lift better than a blepharoplasty?

Summary

Dr Darren McKeown outlines the differences between laser eye lifts and lower eyelid blepharoplasty. While the laser is ideal for skin tightening and fine lines, blepharoplasty effectively removes puffiness from fatty deposits. Many patients at McKeown Medical benefit from a combination approach. Book a consultation today to discover the right solution for your eye rejuvenation goals.

Transcript

A laser eye lift and blepharoplasty are both effective for addressing different signs of aging around the eyes. A laser eye lift is an excellent procedure for tightening skin and reducing fine lines and wrinkles, whilst a lower blepharoplasty is good for removing any fatty tissue that’s causing puffiness under the eyes. The best option depends on your specific concerns and desired outcomes. Some patients are best suited to a combination of both procedures. During your initial consultation, we will work with you to identify what your goals are and come up with a treatment plan to deliver those goals.

Transcript

On the day of a laser eye lift, you will be welcomed by our dedicated team and taken through another pre-procedure consultation to make sure nothing has changed since we last saw you. The procedure is performed in an outpatient setting under local anaesthetic. After we have you numbed up, we place some numbing eye drops before we insert the metal contact lenses to protect your eyes from the laser. Most patients are surprised by how easy this part is. Next, we pass the laser back and forth over the eye area. The treatment itself usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes. After the procedure, you’ll receive detailed aftercare instructions and a series of follow-up appointments to monitor your progress. Most patients return to normal activities within 10-14 days.

Transcript

Laser eye lift procedures are generally safe, but there are a few potential risks. You can expect intense swelling, redness, and mild discomfort around the eyes following treatment. In rare cases, there can be uneven results due to the laser energy used near delicate eye areas. Very rarely, the treatment can cause scarring, which can result in an ectropion, where the lower eyelid droops down from the eye. Thankfully, this is a rare complication that can be prevented by thorough pre-op evaluation and use of safe settings during the procedure.

What does recovery look like after a laser eye lift? Dr Darren McKeown walks you through the typical 7–10 day recovery period, including what to expect as the skin heals. Transcript

Recovery after a laser eye lift generally takes 7-10 days initially. During this period, the skin around your eyes will be swollen, red, and will ooze some serous fluid. When this resolves, you can typically begin normal activities again after 7-10 days, although the skin will remain a little pink for several months, during which time you will need to use some makeup to cover it up. With proper care and adherence to aftercare instructions, most patients return to their normal routines within a couple of weeks while continuing to see gradual improvements in skin tightness and overall appearance over the following weeks and months.

Summary

After a laser eye lift, proper aftercare is key to achieving the best results. Dr Darren McKeown shares advice on wound care, sun protection, and skincare to avoid during healing. With careful management, patients can enjoy a smoother, tighter eye area and long-lasting rejuvenation. Follow Dr McKeown’s expert guidance at McKeown Medical for optimal recovery and results.

Transcript

After a laser eye lift, it is important to avoid certain activities to ensure optimal healing. You will have some strict wound care in the first week to 10 days, during which you should plan to stay at home. After this initial healing period, you can get back to more normal activities, although it’s important to avoid sun exposure and apply SPF if you are going to be out and about. Your skin is going to be sensitive and remain pink for a few months, so avoid any harsh skincare during this time. Following these guidelines helps ensure a smooth recovery and maximises the benefits of the treatment.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery & Aftercare

Initially the skin around your eyes will be red and swollen and it will likely ooze serous fluid for the first day or so. You will need someone to drive you home after treatment. We will provide you with simple instructions on how to keep the wound clean and hydrated as it heals and we will see you back in the clinic regularly during the healing period to make sure that things are progressing as expected.

Typically by around day 7-10 most patients have healed enough to allow them to get back to normal activities. The skin below the eye however will remain slightly pink for several months, although it can usually be covered with make up. If volume replacement injections are also planned as part of your treatment program, we typically perform these around six weeks after the laser procedure. The volume replacement is a temporary procedure, although the results typically last a couple of years before a further touch up is required. The results of the laser are permanent, in that the skin quality will always be better than if you hadn’t undergone the procedure.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

The benefits are significant reduction in fine lines and wrinkles and tightening of the skin under the eye.

Is the laser eye lift the correct treatment for me?

If your main issue is loose skin with fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin under the eye then the laser eye lift is a good option to address these concerns. If you also have hollowing and volume loss, then we would usually recommend combining it with volume restoring injections. If you have prominent fat pads below the eyes, then a surgical blepharoplasty might be the best option for you.

Wouldn’t I be better just having lower eye lid surgery?

Lower eyelid surgery is a tricky operation – and it doesn’t fix all of the concerns that people have with the appearance of their lower eyelids. If you have crepe skin or fine lines, then it is likely that your surgeon will recommend laser eye lift in addition to surgery to achieve the best result. Likewise, unless you have some sort of volume restoration (for example fat transfer or filler injections), then a lower blepharoplasty won’t address the hollows under the eye. That’s why it’s not as simple as surgery vs laser being better than each other. The best solution for your lower eyelids will depend a lot on your own anatomy and the precise things you want to improve.

Which anaesthetic is used?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, meaning you are awake throughout and free to go home immediately after.

What's the downtime?

Most people are healed from laser eye lift in around 7-10 days. During this time the skin on your lower eyelids will be red and swollen and oozing and you will not want to go outside. However, you will usually feel well within yourself otherwise and most patients are quite happy to work from home during the healing period.

When will I see results?

You will see initial results in around one week, although it takes several months to appreciate the full, final outcome.

The improvement in your skin will be permanent, in that your skin will always be better than if you hadn’t had the treatment. However, the procedure doesn’t stop you from ageing in the future and so it is likely that you will want additional procedures in the future.
