How Does It Work?

What Is FUE Hair Transplantation?

FUE is a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure that involves harvesting individual hair follicles from the donor area (typically the back or sides of the scalp) and transplanting them to the areas experiencing hair loss. Unlike older techniques that involve large strips of scalp, FUE leaves minimal scarring and offers a faster recovery time, making it the gold standard in modern hair transplantation.

Donor Site

The donor site, typically located at the back or sides of the scalp, is where healthy hair follicles are extracted for transplantation. These areas are chosen because they are resistant to the hormonal changes that cause hair loss in male patients. The donor site is very important because there is a finite supply of follicles and we want to conserve as many as possible to achieve the best density possible.

At McKeown Medical, we take great care to minimise damage to the donor site by using precise techniques that ensure minimal scarring and preservation of surrounding follicles. Dr Mani’s hands-on approach ensures that every follicle is harvested with care, maximising the number of viable grafts while maintaining the natural appearance of the donor area.

Recipient Site

The recipient site is the area experiencing hair loss, where the harvested follicles are transplanted. Creating a natural-looking recipient site requires precision and an artistic eye. Dr Mani meticulously plans the placement of each graft, considering factors like hairline shape, density, and the natural direction of hair growth. By personally creating the incisions and placing the first 10% of grafts, he ensures the highest standards of quality and aesthetic results.

Dr Mani is also highly skilled in dense packing, a technique used to achieve a thicker hairline for the best cosmetic outcome. This is not as simple as just plugging more holes, filling them up and hoping for the best. There is a lot of skill in getting the density just right, with just enough space between each graft to allow the graft to survive. If you try and overdo it, you can place too much pressure on the follicles, causing them to die. Dense packing is not suitable for every patient, but if it is suitable for you and it is a part of what you want to achieve from your hair transplant, then it is a fine art at which Dr Mani excels.

What to Expect

The FUE Procedure: Step by Step

Initial contact

When you make your first enquire you will be introduced to a hair transplant specialist Patient Relationship Manager (PRM). Your PRM will ask you for photos of both the front and back of your head so we can see the hair loss and the quality of your donor site. They will show these to Dr Mani and get back to you with an initial recommendation on whether or not you are suitable for a hair transplant and indication of how many grafts may be required to achieve what you want.

Consultation

All patients will have a direct consultation with Dr Mani at least two weeks before any planned procedure. All consultations in our practice are with the doctor himself, not a salesperson and then meet the doctor for the first time on the day of surgery as is standard in many hair transplant clinics. Using your photographs, he will assess your hair loss and determine the number of grafts needed to achieve your desired result. He will also take you through what’s involved in the procedure, what the recovery will be like, how long it will take to see results, what sort of results you can expect and he will talk to you directly about the possible risks of the treatment so you can make a fully informed decision. The consultation can either be performed in-person in the clinic, or virtually on by video call depending on your preferences.

Hairline Design

On the day of your procedure Dr Mani will meticulously design your new hairline, taking into account your facial structure, age, and aesthetic goals. A well-planned hairline is crucial for achieving a natural appearance. He will show you this in the mirror and you will have the opportunity to discuss this and request changes before you proceed with surgery.

Preparation

Next, the donor area is trimmed, and local anaesthesia is administered. This is the only part of the procedure where you should experience any discomfort.

Follicular Unit Extraction

Dr Mani performs all the punches and extractions personally, ensuring each follicle is harvested with care and precision. This step is critical as donor hair is a limited resource, and every graft counts. In most clinics the doctor simply does the punch and the technicians remove the grafts. We believe that this is such an important step in the process that it should be done by the doctor himself.

Recipient Site Creation

Once the follicles are harvested, Dr Mani creates tiny incisions in the recipient area to place the grafts. He takes full responsibility for this step, ensuring the angle, direction, and density of the grafts mimic natural hair growth as close as possible. At McKeown Medical, we utilise advanced sapphire blades during the incision. Sapphire blades offer unparalleled precision, allowing for smaller, cleaner incisions compared to traditional steel blades. This minimises tissue damage, promotes faster healing, and ensures optimal graft placement. The use of sapphire blades also helps achieve higher density and a more natural appearance by enabling closer spacing of grafts.

Initial Graft Placement

To achieve optimal results, Dr Mani personally places the first 10% of grafts himself, before handing over to his technicians. This allows him to assess the scalp’s response to the placement technique and make any necessary adjustments. In most clinics, all graft placement is purely the domain of the hair transplant technicians.

Graft Placement Completion

After the initial grafts are placed, Dr Mani’s highly skilled technicians complete the remaining placement under his close supervision. This team approach ensures efficiency without compromising quality.

Post-Procedure Care

After the procedure, we will make sure you get something to eat and drink before you go home. Our clinic nurse will call you the day after your procedure to make sure you are doing OK and we will get you back in the clinic a week later for a wound check to make sure everything looks fine and there are no signs of complications like infection. After that, it’s a matter of waiting for the new follicles to grow. Dr Mani will follow up with you six and twelve months after your procedure to make sure you have achieved the results you were hoping for.

Avoiding Bad Results: What Sets Us Apart

Hair transplantation is an art and a science. Poorly executed procedures can lead to unnatural hairlines, low follicle survival rates, or visible scarring. At McKeown Medical, we take every precaution to avoid these pitfalls:

Dr Mani’s Involvement: By handling the critical stages of the procedure himself, Dr Mani ensures every step meets the highest standards.

Attention to Detail: From designing your hairline to placing the initial grafts, our meticulous approach ensures natural-looking results.

Team Excellence: Our technicians are highly trained and work under Dr Mani’s guidance, ensuring consistency and quality throughout the procedure. Dr Mani works with the same technicians in both his Glasgow and London practice: they travel with him.

Proud history: McKeown Medical was established by Dr Darren McKeown as a single practitioner in 2007. Since that time he has grown to become one of the leading centres for private healthcare in Scotland by a firm and longstanding commitment to excellence. If we can’t do it with excellence, we’d rather not do it at all.

Recovery & Results

Recovery & Results

Recovery Process

Recovering from an FUE hair transplant is straightforward but requires patience as the transplanted follicles settle into their new environment. In the first few days post-procedure, you may experience some swelling around the forehead and eyes, which is a normal response to the transplantation process. This swelling typically subsides within a week. During this period, it’s essential to follow the provided aftercare instructions to minimise discomfort and protect the grafts.

In the weeks following the transplant, the transplanted hairs will enter a shedding phase, which can be unsettling but is entirely expected. This temporary loss is a natural part of the hair growth cycle, as the follicles reset and prepare for regrowth. New hair typically begins to emerge within three to four months, with noticeable improvements in density and coverage by six to nine months. Full results can be appreciated around 12 to 18 months post-procedure.

Possible Complications

While FUE hair transplants are generally safe and well-tolerated, like any medical procedure, there are potential complications. These may include infection, prolonged redness, or swelling at the donor or recipient sites. Some patients might experience temporary numbness or tingling in the treated areas. Rarely, issues such as folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles) or uneven hair growth can occur. Additionally, some grafts may not survive the transplantation process, a risk we strive to minimise through slow and meticulous, doctor-led work. At McKeown Medical, we take every precaution to keep graft survival rates as high as possible.

In some cases, there is a risk of total failure of the transplant. However, in Dr Mani’s experienced hands, this risk is less than 1%. Our commitment to precision and quality at every step of the process helps to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Follow-Up Care

At McKeown Medical, we prioritise comprehensive follow-up care to support your recovery and ensure the best results. The day after your procedure, our clinic nurse will call you to check on your progress and address any immediate concerns. A week later, you’ll be invited to the clinic for a wound check to assess the healing process. Dr Mani typically reviews your results at six and twelve months post-surgery to evaluate the outcome and address any questions you may have.
Additionally, you’ll have constant access to your Patient Relationship Manager (PRM) who can answer most of your questions and can arrange further appointments with Dr Mani if needed. This commitment to ongoing care sets us apart and ensures your journey is smooth and successful.

How much does a hair transplant cost?

We believe in fair and transparent pricing. We do not advertise low prices to get you in the door, and then tell you the price has gone up later. Likewise, we don’t hide our prices to get you in for a consultation, then tell you an exorbitant price and offer you a huge discount if you commit straight away. These are the unethical sales techniques that are rife in hair transplant clinics in the UK.

At McKeown Medical, the cost of your FUE hair transplant is straightforward at £4 per graft, therefore a typical 2000 graft procedure will cost £8000.

How many grafts are needed for a FUE transplant?

The number of grafts varies depending on the extent of hairline recession. A typical hairline transplant requires 1,200 to 2,500 grafts.

Are there risks involved?

Hairline transplants are generally safe. Potential risks include infection, scarring, or uneven growth, which are minimised by our meticulous techniques and aftercare. There is a small risk of hair transplant failure, although Dr Mani’s personal failure rate is less than 1% which is why he has become the go-to global destination for hair transplant procedures
