The brow lift is a procedure that is designed to re-shape and reposition the eyebrows. Historically, brow lifts were performed to lift the entire brow as high as possible which resulted in a surprised and unnatural appearance. Our understanding of the aesthetics of the brow is now much more sophisticated, which means we now have a much more nuanced approach to the brow lift procedure.

Historically we assumed that brows just got lower and droopier with age. However, that’s actually not what usually happens. Very often as we get older the eyebrows actually get higher as we get older – caused by an increase in activity of the forehead muscle (the frontalis muscle). Lifting the entire brow in this situation is aesthetically the incorrect thing to do. Although the central part of the brow often elevates with advancing age, the tail of the brow usually becomes lower and flatter. Our present approach to brow lift is therefore usually to lift only the tail of the brow, which is done via a temporal approach (using an incision in the temple).

Determining whether or not you need a brow lift requires a careful examination and consideration of the facial aesthetics. Very often patients who think they need a brow lift are often better served with an upper eyelid surgery to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids. Occasionally patients will require both eyelid surgery and brow lift surgery, although we normally do this as two separate procedures to ensure we achieve the best possible outcome. The brow lift can be carried out on its own, although it is often combined with a facelift lift procedure by simply extending the temple part of the facelift incision a little higher to allow us to reposition the tail of the brow.

I had face and neck lift surgery with Mr Russell Bramhall. I can honestly say that all aspects of the process were excellent, and I cannot recommend Russell highly enough. It’s now 6 months on, I am absolutely delighted with the results and I cannot thank Russell enough for giving me my confidence back.

Dr. Russell is an amazing surgeon. Underwent upper blepharoplasty and facelift with liposuction under chin. I was pretty nervous before the surgery but needn’t have been as Dr. Russell and his team were so calming and professional. The aftercare provided was amazing. I am delighted with the results and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr. Russell.

Five star experience. Before, during and aftercare is exceptional. I would never use anyone else if I was to consider surgery again. The procedure begins with some injections of local anaesthetic at the incision site in the temple. Next, the skin is separated from the under lying tissue and the skin of the temple and tail of the brow is repositioned into a more desirable location. Any excess skin is removed and the wounds are closed with sutures. We normally use dissolving stitches in this area, so there is no need to have the stitches removed at a later date.
After your procedure you will be free to go home soon after. We keep in you in the clinic for a short while to make sure you feel ok, have a cup of tea and something light to eat, before heading off. You need to be collected by a responsible adult to take you home, since you won’t be fit to drive yourself. Usually within 7-10 days the swelling has subsided enough to let most patients get back to most normal activities. It will take a further few months for the remaining subtle swelling to subside before you can appreciate the full, final results of your procedure.
The main benefit of the brow lift is a reduction in the tired look that can be created by heavy, drooping lateral brows. If the heaviness of the excess skin obstructs your lateral visual fields, this can also be improved by lifting the brow.
We perform the brow lift under local anaesthetic, meaning you are awake throughout the procedure and free to go home afterwards.
Most patients can resume normal activities within 7-10 days of their procedure.
You will be able to see an immediate improvement, although the result is usually exaggerated initially because of the swelling. As this subsides, you will be able to see continual improvements as the weeks and months pass by.
