Pigmentation is caused by an excess of “pigment” in the skin. Brown pigment (seen in Age Spots, Sun Damage, Freckles or Melasma) is the result of excess melanin: a substance produced by specialist cells called melanocytes, which are found in the topmost layer of the skin. Melanin is usually produced in response to UV exposure, and it’s primary function is to protect the skin cells from the damaging effects of sunlight. Melanin is also the pigment that gives our skin the appearance of a sun tan; however, with chronic exposure to sunlight, often over many years, the melanocytes can go into over-drive, and produce excess melanin. As a result, brown patches – referred to as “hyperpigmentation” – can start to manifest,
There are various ways to tackle pigmentation, and we always advocate a tailor-made treatment plan to address your unique concerns. State-of-the-art Laser is an effective way to reduce the appearance of pigment, while BBL (Broad Band Light) is helpful in creating a more homogenous skin tone, as it targets the pigment caused by both melanin and blood vessels. As hyperpigmentation often occurs in conjunction with vascular changes, BBL is therefore often our first line of defence when it comes to treating sun-damaged skin.
