What Is Endometrial Ablation with NovaSure®?

Endometrial ablation is a medical procedure that removes or destroys the endometrial lining of the uterus, which is responsible for menstrual bleeding. The NovaSure® device utilises advanced radiofrequency energy to thermally treat the endometrium precisely and efficiently. The procedure is quick, safe, and has an excellent success rate, with over 90% of women reporting their periods have successfully reduced or stopped at one year.

Key Benefits of NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation

  • Minimally Invasive: The procedure is performed without incisions, reducing risks and recovery time.
  • Quick Procedure: Typically completed in under five minutes.
  • High Success Rates: Most women report a marked improvement, with over 90% satisfaction rates.
  • Convenient Recovery: Patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Provides effective and sustained relief from heavy periods.

Initial Consultation: Understanding Your Needs

The journey to effective treatment begins with a thorough initial consultation. This vital step ensures that endometrial ablation is the right choice for you and provides an opportunity to discuss your symptoms, medical history, and personal preferences.

Meeting with Our Consultant Gynaecologist
Our consultant gynaecologist, Dr Iain Martin, will review your medical history in detail and discuss your symptoms.
He will explain the range of available treatment options, ensuring you have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Ultrasound Scan
A transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound will be performed to examine your uterus and identify any abnormalities, such as fibroids or polyps, that could be contributing to your heavy periods.

Personalised Treatment Plan
If NovaSure® endometrial ablation is right for you, you will be assigned a dedicated patient relationship manager to guide you through the next steps.

What to Expect

On the Day of the Procedure

On the day of your NovaSure® endometrial ablation, our team will ensure you feel comfortable and prepared. Here’s what you can expect:

Arrival and Preparation

  • You will be welcomed into our clinic and guided to a private treatment room.
  • Our medical team will review your procedure details and address any last-minute questions.

The Procedure

  • NovaSure® ablation is performed under local anaesthetic in a calm, outpatient setting.
  • Using the NovaSure® device, thermal energy is applied to remove the endometrial lining.
  • The entire process typically takes less than 15 minutes.

Post-Procedure Care

You will be monitored briefly in our recovery area to ensure you are comfortable and ready to go home.

Sedation

If you prefer, you have the option of receiving sedation during the NovaSure® procedure. Sedation is provided by a Consultant Anaesthetist who inserts a cannula in the back of your hand and delivers some medication to make you drowsy.

The sedation means that you are drowsy throughout your procedure and usually won’t remember it afterwards. The effects will wear off very quickly as soon as the sedation medicine is stopped at the end of the procedure – typically within 10-15 minutes.

If you have your procedure performed under sedation, you will need a responsible adult to take you home afterwards and stay with you for 4 hours. You should not drive until the following day.
