What Are Fibroids and Polyps?

Fibroids
These are typically benign growths of muscle cells within the uterus. Submucosal fibroids, which grow beneath the inner lining of the uterus and extend into the uterine cavity, can cause heavy or painful periods, irregular bleeding, and may even impact fertility.

Polyps
These are small, usually benign growths in the endometrium (the lining of the uterus). Polyps can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding between periods, post-coital bleeding, and sometimes pelvic discomfort.

Why choose MyoSure® over traditional surgical approaches?

The MyoSure® procedure is a trusted, effective, and patient-friendly option for managing uterine abnormalities. It offers a path to relief and recovery with minimal disruption to your life and preserves your reproductive health.

Minimally Invasive: No external incisions are required, reducing risks and recovery time.

Uterine Preservation: The procedure removes problematic tissue while preserving the uterus, an important consideration for women who wish to maintain fertility.

Quick Recovery: Patients usually resume daily activities shortly after the procedure.

High Success Rates: Most patients experience significant symptom relief and improved quality of life.

Flexible Anaesthetic Options: Patients can choose between local anaesthetic or to be sleeping with some sedation. There is no need for general anaesthetic.

Is the MyoSure® Procedure Right for You?

The MyoSure® procedure is ideal for individuals experiencing symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, or pelvic discomfort due to fibroids or polyps. It is also an excellent option for those seeking a less invasive alternative to traditional surgical methods.

The first step in the treatment process is to have a consultation, examination and ultrasound scan with Dr Iain to work out what your problem is, and find out the best treatment option for your circumstances.

What to Expect

What’s involved in the MyoSure® procedure?

The MyoSure® procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing patients to return home the same day. Here’s what you can expect during the process:

Preparation

Depending on individual needs and preferences, the procedure can be performed using local anaesthetic on its own or under local anaesthetic with sedation. If you choose to have some sedation it will be provided by a consultant anaesthetist, and you will need a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you overnight.

Procedure

A hysteroscope (a thin, lighted tube) is gently inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterine cavity. This provides a clear view of the uterus and any abnormal tissue. A specialised device is used to remove fibroids or polyps identified during the procedure. The process is precise, ensuring the surrounding healthy tissue remains intact.

Duration

The procedure is relatively quick, often lasting between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the amount of tissue being removed. The tissue that has been removed will be sent to a lab to be examined under the microscope to make sure there are no abnormal cells present. When this histology is returned, Dr Iain will give you a call to let you know the results.

Recovery

After the procedure, patients are monitored briefly before being discharged. Many experience mild cramping or spotting, which typically resolves within a few days. Most individuals can return to normal activities within 24 to 48 hours.

What will Dr Iain want to know from me?

To get a better understanding of your condition, and the best treatment option for your circumstances, Dr Iain will ask you a series of questions to understand:

  • Your current symptoms and how they affect your daily life.
  • Your medical history, including any previous uterine surgeries or conditions.
  • Your preferences regarding anaesthetic and pain management during the procedure.
  • Your plans for future pregnancies, if applicable.

Possible Complications of the MyoSure® Procedure

While the MyoSure® procedure is considered safe and effective, like any medical procedure, it carries a small risk of complications. These may include:

  • Infection: There is a slight risk of infection in the uterus or surrounding areas.
  • Bleeding: Some patients may experience heavier than expected bleeding during or after the procedure.
  • Uterine Perforation: Rarely, the instruments used during the procedure may cause a small tear in the uterine wall.
  • Scar Tissue Formation: In some cases, the procedure may lead to the formation of intrauterine adhesions (scar tissue).
  • Reaction to Anaesthetic: Depending on the type of anaesthetic used, there may be minor side effects or, in rare cases, allergic reactions.

Dr Iain will discuss these risks with you and take steps to minimise them. It is important to contact your GP if you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or any other unusual symptoms after the procedure.
