The concept of an anti-wrinkle brow lift sounds appealing – but what is it? How does it work? Doesn’t everyone who gets anti-wrinkle injections want a brow lift?

In this article, I want to demystify the anti-wrinkle brow lift – delving into the science behind how it works as well as explaining when I think it’s helpful, and when I think it should be avoided.

I will also address common concerns and questions. These include the safety of the procedure, potential side effects, and the longevity of the results.

By the end of this article, you should have a comprehensive understanding of anti-wrinkle brow lifts and a good idea of whether or not it might be a good treatment option for you.

Demystifying anti-wrinkle Brow Lifts: What Are They?

An anti-wrinkle brow lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses anti-wrinkle injections to lift the eyebrows. This treatment targets the muscles that pull the eyebrows down. Now, if we can remember all the way back to high school physics, if we reduce the force being exerted by the depressor muscles (those that pull the eyebrows down) it means the relative force being exerted by the elevator muscles (those that pull the eyebrows up the way) is increased.  This is the physics of how it works.

In real terms, to achieve an anti-wrinkle brow lift it means we need to relax the frown muscles (between the eyebrows) and the muscles around the eyes because both of these muscle groups pull the eyebrows down when they contract. We need to leave the frontalis muscle – the main forehead muscle – at least partially intact, because we are relying on that muscle to pull the eyebrows up.

Now here is a big piece of context that you should be aware of. The anti-wrinkle brow lift is not a licensed use for the medication. That means it is ‘off-label’. Doctors perform this treatment thousands of times per day all over the world and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that it is both safe and effective, but it has not been through the same level of rigorous clinical trials that other uses of the drug have been and so you should always bear this in mind and talk to your doctor about any concerns you have.

The difference between an anti-wrinkle brow lift and a traditional brow lift

This procedure differs significantly from a traditional brow lift, which is a surgical procedure. Surgical brow lifts involve making incisions to physically lift the skin and underlying tissues. In contrast, an anti-wrinkle brow lift achieves a similar effect without the need for incisions or anaesthetic.

Patients typically seek an anti-wrinkle brow lift to address drooping brows or if they have a little bit of excess skin in the upper eyelid. Excess skin in the upper eyelid is best treated using a blepharoplasty procedure, although if your excess skin is more mild than an anti-wrinkle brow lift may be a suitable alternative. Even if you have more significant excess skin but just don’t want to have a surgical procedure, then trying an anti-wrinkle brow lift is a reasonable alternative.

In the hands of a qualified aesthetic doctor, an anti-wrinkle brow lift can be a safe and effective part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. It’s essential to consult with a professional to determine if this treatment is suitable for your specific needs and aesthetic goals.

The Science Behind anti-wrinkle injections and Brow Anatomy

Anti-wrinkle injections are a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In aesthetic medicine, it’s used in small, controlled doses to relax specific muscles. When injected into the muscles that pull the eyebrows down, anti-wrinkle injections causes these muscles to relax, allowing the eyebrows to lift.

The anatomy of the forehead and brow area is complex, with several muscles working together to create facial expressions. The primary muscles targeted during an anti-wrinkle brow lift are the corrugator supercilii, procerus, and orbicularis oculi muscles. These muscles are responsible for pulling the eyebrows down and creating wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows.

By carefully injecting anti-wrinkle into these muscles, a skilled practitioner can achieve a subtle lift of the eyebrows. This lift can help to smooth out wrinkles and create a more youthful appearance. However, the exact placement and dosage of anti-wrinkle injections will depend on the individual’s unique facial structure and goals.

Is everyone suitable for an anti-wrinkle brow lift?

The short answer to this question is ‘no’. The anti-wrinkle brow lift may be a suitable option for you if you have heavy eyebrows that sit in a low position on your forehead or if you have a little excess skin in the upper eyelid. However, with advancing age not everyone changes in the same way.

Somewhat counterintuitively, many people’s eyebrows actually get higher as they get older. Next time you visit a nursing home take a look at the position of the eyebrows on foreheads of senior citizens. They are often much higher, and so raising the eyebrows is only aesthetically indicated if you are ageing in a way that causes the eyebrows to move lower. If your eyebrows are already in a normal position and you raise them, it can create an unnatural surprised look that is a tell-tale sign of having work done – so the anti-wrinkle brow lift needs to be used with caution!

The Non-Invasive Nature of anti-wrinkle injections as a Key Benefit

One of the primary benefits of an anti-wrinkle brow lift is its minimally-invasive nature. Unlike surgical brow lifts, which involve incisions and a recovery period, anti-wrinkle is administered through small injections. This makes it a less daunting option for many patients, particularly those who are apprehensive about undergoing surgery.

The procedure is typically quick, often completed within 15 minutes. This short procedure time, coupled with the minimal downtime, makes anti-wrinkle brow lifts an attractive option for busy individuals. Patients can  return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, making it an easier choice.

Moreover, the minimally-invasive nature of anti-wrinkle reduces the risk of complications associated with surgical procedures, such as infection or scarring.

Lastly, the minimally-invasive nature of anti-wrinkle allows for a more gradual approach to facial rejuvenation. This can result in a more natural-looking outcome, as changes can be made subtly over time, rather than all at once as with surgery. This gradual approach can also help patients feel more in control of their aesthetic journey.

The Procedure: What to Expect During an anti-wrinkle Brow Lift

An anti-wrinkle brow lift begins with a thorough consultation with a qualified aesthetic medicine practitioner. This consultation is crucial to discuss your aesthetic goals, assess your facial structure, and determine the most effective treatment plan. It’s also an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedure.

During the procedure, the doctor will use a fine needle to inject anti-wrinkle into specific muscles in your forehead and brow area. These injections are strategically placed to relax the muscles that pull the brows down, allowing the muscles that lift the brows to function unopposed. This results in a subtle lift of the brows and a smoother forehead.

The procedure is typically quick, often completed within 15 minutes. While some patients report a slight pinching sensation during the injections, most find the procedure to be relatively comfortable.

After the procedure, you may notice some redness and swelling at the injection sites. These little ‘bumps’ go down very quickly, usually within about 15-20 minutes so they are gone by the time you get back to the car.

The full effects of an anti-wrinkle brow lift are typically visible within 7 to 14 days after the procedure. During this time, you’ll notice a gradual lifting of the brows and a reduction in wrinkles. The results can last between 3 to 6 months, depending on individual factors such as how your body metabolizes the drug. Regular maintenance treatments are recommended to sustain the lift effect.

Safety and Side Effects: A Comparative Analysis

anti-wrinkle treatments have a well-established safety profile when administered by a trained professional. It has been used in medicine for over 30 years. However, like any medical procedure, it does come with potential side effects.

Most side effects of an anti-wrinkle brow lift are minor and temporary. They may include:

  • Redness or bruising at the injection site
  • Headache or flu-like symptoms
  • Eyelid drooping or asymmetry
  • Mild discomfort or pain at the injection site

These side effects typically resolve on their own without the need for additional treatment. If you develop a droopy eyelid, this can take up to six weeks for it to wear off.

Realistic Expectations: Subtle Yet Effective Outcomes

An anti-wrinkle brow lift can create a more youthful and alert appearance. However, it’s important to have realistic expectations. The results are subtle and aim to enhance your natural features rather than drastically alter your appearance.

Enhancing Results: Combining anti-wrinkle injections with Other Treatments

anti-wrinkle brow lifts can be performed on their own, or as part of a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. For example, anti-wrinkle injections work very well in the upper part of the face and around the eyes where muscle hyperactivity is one of the main causes of ageing, below the eyes however volume loss is one of the biggest factors and so injectable dermal fillers are a popular combination for a more comprehensive rejuvenation.

Many patients who chose to address the signs of ageing with injectables like anti-wrinkle and dermal fillers will also find it helpful to add in some laser skin rejuvenation treatments like BBL or Halo laser to improve skin quality.

Choosing the Right Practitioner: Qualifications and Experience

Choosing the right practitioner is a critical step in your anti-wrinkle brow lift journey. Having a detailed understanding of anatomy, physiology and pharmacology means your experienced doctor has an intuitive understanding of how to achieve the best result for you – not just a ‘point and shoot’ or ‘painting by numbers’ approach.

As everyone knows, the lack of protections in Scotland for patients having cosmetic procedures is something I have campaigned on for years.

It’s an issue that I feel very passionately about and will not stop campaigning on until we have meaningful change from our government. I have written to the government many times over the years and during the recent consultation I wrote to the minister for public health, Jenni Minto, on behalf of 20 of the most experienced doctors in aesthetic practice from all across Scotland explaining why - in very clear scientific terms - she has got it wrong with her current proposals to allow beauty therapists to continue injecting medicines and administering medical devices.

We have asked Jenni Minto to meet with us, to hear our perspective, but she continues to refuse to sit down and talk to us. In tonight’s STV news Donna has been exceptionally brave to speak on camera about the harm she has suffered as a result of a beautician, and the NHS care she has required, but sadly she is not alone.

There are so many Donnas who have been harmed in Scotland and we hear about it every day in our clinics across the country although the majority are too scared or embarrassed to speak out publicly and the government don’t want to listen to the professionals.

Whilst people like Donna continue to be harmed by the diabolical lack of regulation in Scotland, I will not stop campaigning. The government needs to act now to make injectable toxins and dermal fillers medic-only, bringing us in line with every other country in Europe, every state in America and every state in Australia.

Why don’t our government believe people in Scotland deserve the same protections as all of these other countries?
