Melasma

Melasma is a particular type of pigmentation which takes the form of larger, confluent patches of hyperpigmentation, often across the cheeks and forehead. It is often associated with high levels of female sex hormones, which is why it is a common complaint of women during and following pregnancy, and often those who are taking the oral contraceptive pill. Fortunately, our advanced understanding of Melasma, in combination with the most proven skincare solutions, enables us to effectively reduce its appearance.

What can help?

Treating melasma is challenging, not least of all because it is being driven by hormones within your body. Our protocol for treating Melasma includes using some topical skin lightening creams (hydroquinone) for six weeks, followed by treatment with the Halo laser, and a further six weeks of skin lightening creams after laser. Although this usually achieves a good improvement, melasma does have a habit of reoccurring and so vigilant sun protection is essential to reduce the chances of recurrence.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Our bespoke topical prescriptions mean that we can noticeably fade the appearance of Melasma. However, before prescribing a programme, it is important to carry out a thorough consultation: in order to understand the patient’s full medical history, but also to understand their aesthetic goals.

Which anaesthetic is used?

No anaesthetic is required for the use of topical skincare prescriptions. The Halo laser procedure is performed with the help of topical numbing cream.

What's the downtime?

Your doctor will advise on the best programme and application; however, a little redness or peeling is not uncommon. This will gradually reduce as your skin becomes more tolerant of the topical ingredients. When you have the laser treatment, you will need around 5-7 days of downtime for the redness and swelling to dissipate.

When will I see results?

While best results are visible following completion of your topical prescription course, you should be able to notice a gradual improvement in your Melasma after approximately 12 weeks.
