Jowls

Jowls – the fleshy, slack skin of the lower cheek and jawline – are something usually acquired with age or significant weight loss. As the tissues of the face lose elasticity and collagen is depleted, the skin hangs more heavily, while the facial skeleton begins to shrink. This combination of factors manifests in “jowls”: disrupting the smooth lines of the lower-face, while often imparting a look of sadness of anger – even when the patient is in good spirits.

What can help?

In order to lessen the appearance of jowls without surgery, we work to restore the underlying volume loss that causes the formation of jowls and sagging in the lower face – typically injecting fillers in to the cheeks, chin and jowls like in the examples here.

This can give our patients a significant improvement in the jowls, lasting up to two years, without surgery. For the most comprehensive non-surgical lift, we perform our signature volumetric facelift procedure.

More options

For patients who have more severe jowls, or who want the best improvement possible, then the gold standard way of correcting the jowls is a surgical facelift. We were the first clinic in Scotland, and to date the only clinic in Scotland, to pioneer the deep plane technique. This is an advanced facelift procedure that focuses on repositioning the deeper tissues of the face to create a significant improvement that not only looks natural, but lasts a long time too. For most patients, a facelift is a once in a lifetime procedure. The jowls will always look better than if you never had the procedure.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

By strengthening the facial bone structure and subtly shaping the lower-face with dermal fillers we can give more support to the soft tissues – thereby lessening the effect of jowls. This can be achieved with little to no downtime.

Which anaesthetic is used?

We use dermal fillers which contain a local anaesthetic known as lidocaine, which helps to reduce discomfort – while use of a topical numbing cream can be of benefit for patients who are anxious.

What's the downtime?

With dermal fillers, the chin is prone to swelling, and will likely feel tender post-procedure – though this has usually settled by the following day. Most patients are ready to resume their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. If bruising occurs, it can be easily covered with makeup – though this should not be applied until the next day. We also encourage patients to sleep with their head elevated for the first few nights following the procedure, to keep any swelling to a minimum.

When will I see results?

Following treatment with dermal fillers, a sleeker-looking face is instantly revealed – though best results are to be seen in two weeks’ time, when the filler has integrated with the tissues. With a Lower Face & Neck Lift, we ask to see you for a follow-up at one week, two weeks, six weeks, three months and six months – until we are all satisfied that you have fully healed and achieved the outcome we were anticipating.
