Forehead lines

Forehead lines are one of the most common and noticeable signs of ageing in the upper face, and are caused by repetitive movements of the forehead muscle – for example, raising the eyebrows. Over time, these dynamic expressions lead to the formation of static lines which run horizontally across the forehead: a process that is often accelerated by a history of sun exposure or smoking.

What can help?

The most effective treatment to smooth the appearance of forehead lines is the use of muscle relaxing injections. When the forehead muscle is relaxed, this reduces the tension in the Frontalis muscle (the main forehead muscle). Whenever we relax the forehead muscle however, we normally always relax the frown muscles (between the eyebrows) at the same time – to maintain the height and shape of the eyebrows, and prevent drooping. Occasionally, forehead lines can also be treated by filler injections or laser resurfacing. Consultation to treat forehead lines is available with all of our non-surgical doctors: including Dr Darren McKeown and Dr Rhona Cameron.

Common Questions

What are the benefits?

Once tension in the forehead muscle is lessened, the skin returns to a smoother, more rested appearance with forehead wrinkles noticeably reduced. If the lines are particularly deep, they will often be improved with treatment but will not vanish completely. However, a course of treatment over a period of time can prove effective: gradually softening even the deepest wrinkles until they disappear. This has led us to speculate that – in addition to the mechanical effect of weakening the forehead muscle – injectable treatment of the forehead may possess bio-stimulatory qualities, therefore triggering a “repair process” in the skin (though how and why this happens is not yet fully understood).

Which anaesthetic is used?

Forehead line treatment generally does not require the use of anaesthetic. When performing treatments, we use only the finest-gauge needles and take care to change these regularly, therefore reducing discomfort and potential bruising.

What's the downtime?

There is little to no downtime with most forehead line treatments. Patients can resume their normal activities immediately after treatment, though applying makeup is not advised until the following day.

When will I see results?

The results of most treatments take up to two weeks to reach their full effect apparent. The effects will typically last between three to six months, before a repeat treatment is required. Typically, most people opt to have repeat treatment two to three times per year, and they often try to coincide treatment dates with big events, such as birthdays or Christmas.
