The Mirena coil, also known as the Mirena intrauterine system (IUS), is a small, T-shaped device made of flexible plastic that is inserted into the uterus.
This device releases a progesterone-based hormone called Levonorgestrel, providing long-lasting contraceptive benefits and may also address specific health concerns such as abnormal uterine bleeding.
The Mirena coil is not only a highly-effective contraceptive method but also offers additional benefits, such as:
Its versatility makes it a preferred choice for women seeking both contraception and relief from certain medical conditions.
For most uses, including contraception and treatment of heavy periods, the Mirena Coil can be used for up to 8 years. After this period its efficacy diminishes, and it should be replaced or removed to avoid potential complications such as infection or decreased effectiveness.
If you are using the Mirena Coil as the progestogen element of HRT it can only be used for 5 years, after which time it is important to have it replaced or use an alternative progestogen preparation. Leaving a coil in place beyond its recommended duration may lead to adverse effects so timely removal is important.
In some cases, you may prefer to use a hormone coil with lower doses of hormones, or a hormone-free coil. Dr Martin can help you decide which option is right for your specific needs.
If you’re considering the Mirena Coil or need assistance with removal, we are here for you. Our expert services are designed to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Get in touch today to schedule your appointment with Dr. Iain and take control of your reproductive health with confidence.
We believe in clear, transparent pricing. We have no vague ‘from’ prices: the prices here are accurate and reflect what you will pay for our level of expertise, technology and service.
