In practice, I find the stitches to be most useful in the lower face and neck, where other non-surgical techniques usually provide less satisfying results.

The procedure can be used to lift any part of the face, including the forehead, cheeks, jowls, jawline and neck.

WHAT IS A ONE-STITCH FACELIFT?

The one stitch facelift is often promoted as a unique non-surgical facelift — sometimes referred to as a ‘mini lift’ or a ‘lunchtime lift’ because of how quick and straightforward the procedure is. It is promoted as a treatment that you can nip out to lunch and return with younger-looking skin the same day!

In practice however, the results are much less impressive than they sound. Because the thread lift works by placing tension on the soft tissues of the face — and doesn’t actually reposition them properly — the results are short lived. Although it sounds like an attractive option, in our experience the results are not worth the investment and the downtime can actually be much more substantial than some clinics suggest.

In Action: Take a closer look at how this restoration was achieved

HOW DO THREAD LIFTS WORK?

The procedure begins by first identifying the problem areas of excess skin and marking out where each suture — or stitch — should be placed.

Once we draw guide marks, local anaesthetic is injected to make the procedure a pain free experience. The thread lifting stitches contain small cones along their length (similar, if you like, to barbed wire) and are inserted using long needles. After the stitches are in place, they are pulled back to re-suspend the skin and soft tissues whilst the small cones along their length anchor the facial tissues in their new — more youthful — position.

Minimally Invasive Skin Lifting Technique

The most notable benefit of this technique is that it was thought to be a truly minimally invasive way of lifting the skin. Previous ‘thread lift’ techniques used small incisions behind the hairline and behind the ear to insert the sutures and so have been associated with significant bruising, swelling and ‘down time’ afterwards.

The Silhouette Soft thread lifts, on the other hand, have no cutting or scarring and were thought to have very minimal downtime. With the temporary numbness from the local anaesthetic, most patients resume normal activities immediately and go back to work the next day. In our experience, however, the downtime can actually be much more substantial than some clinics suggest.

An alternative that we offer with truly minimal downtime is the Volumetric Facelift using hyaluronic acid injections. Having won awards for his dermal filler treatments, Dr Darren McKeown executes this procedure with complete precision for rejuvenating results.

ONE STITCH FACELIFT FAQS

Before & After: One Stitch Facelift

What Happens Afterwards?

Immediately afterwards you will have a series of needle marks on each side of the face.

These will remain visible for the rest of the day although most people are able to cover them up the next day with make up. You may experience some bruising and swelling around the sutures, although this tends to be relatively minor and short lived. For up to a week after the procedure it may feel tender around the sutures. If necessary, you can take some simple paracetamol to help with this although most patients do not bother with this step. You will be able to feel the stitches and the anchoring cones beneath your skin especially when you apply your skincare products or make up, although you should not be able to see them.

Before & After: One Stitch Facelift

How Long Do The Results Last?

The results were expected to last around 18 months, at which point you can — if you wish — have the procedure repeated. However, we found that unfortunately results were not always as long lasting as this.

Before & After: One Stitch Facelift

What are the Limitations?

The treatment was thought to be ideal for younger patients with mild to moderate skin excess who wish to contour and refine their face & neck area.

In older patients with extensive skin excess, the threads will not be strong enough to provide a lasting lift, so other facelift treatments options may be more appropriate.

In both cases, we would now advise a Volumetric Facelift, which is a non-surgical lift carried out using dermal fillers, or a surgical lower face and neck lift depending on the needs of the patient.
