Reverse The Signs of Ageing

Dr. Russell Bramhall Consultant Plastic Surgeon

Regarded for his facelifts and blepharoplasties, our specialist plastic surgeon strives for an elegant, “invisible” result. His surgeries are complemented by the work of our non-surgical specialists: for a wholly holistic rejuvenation.

“Most facelifts start the same way.

What happens next varies considerably from surgeon to surgeon, and clinic to clinic.

At McKeown Medical we work together as a team of experts to deliver natural, effective, best in class results.”

WHAT WE OFFER

We offer deep plane face and neck lifts in Glasgow at our clinic, McKeown Medical.

A rhytidectomy, more popularly known as a facelift, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin from the lower face and neck area. This type of facial surgery targets loose skin and leaves skin looking tighter and smoother. This is the gold standard treatment for lifting the face and neck. The deep plane technique is the most sophisticated and advanced version of the facelift that few surgeons have the technical expertise to perform.

Who is a Facelift for?

Ageing can appear to join forces with gravity, resulting in jowls under the chin and sagging skin and wrinkles affecting the facial features. A surgical facelift procedure is ideal for patients who are concerned about the more advanced signs of ageing in the lower face and neck.

WHY THE DEEP PLANE FACE AND NECK LIFT?

The deep plane face and neck lift goes deeper below the tissues of the face to release the retaining ligaments of the face. By releasing these important ligaments, the surgeon is able to fully mobilise and reposition the soft tissues of the face for the most effective and natural rejuvenation.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING?

Anaesthetic

Facelift surgery can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. Most of our patients opt for local anaesthetic, to reduce the recovery time, however this is tailored to the patient preference.

Before Surgery

You will need to come to the clinic for at least one pre-operative consultation to discuss your concerns and what you hope to achieve from surgery. During the consultation process we will agree the objectives of surgery and then tailor a treatment plan to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

During Surgery

The surgeon then makes incisions in the sideburn area (in front of the ears), curving around the back of the ear and sometimes into the hair-bearing scalp in this area.

When the skin has been elevated, Russell begins work below the skin on the SMAS layer – sometimes referred to as the muscle layer. In the deep plane technique, he goes below the SMAS to release the retaining ligaments of the face so that the soft tissues can be effectively repositioned.

A key component of the deep plane technique is repositioning the tissues, rather than placing tension on them. Tension is what makes faces look tight and unnatural. Repositioning is the most effective and natural technique.

Scars

The scars are hidden in the natural crease in front of and within the ear, as well as behind this area into the hairline. In the short term, the scars can look red and raised and need some camouflage with hair and make-up. When the scars have had time to heal properly, however, they become barely perceptible.

FACELIFT FAQ'S

One of our patients who underwent a deep plane facelift, with liposuction under the chin, and full face skin resurfacing.

What Is Recovery Like After The Procedure?

Most people will need around two weeks to recover from this procedure before getting back to work.

The bruising and swelling tends to peak after around 3 days, then slowly improves.

By around 2 weeks most patients can start resuming light normal activities, assisted with the help of hair and make up. Full recovery – in terms of being able to get back to rigorous exercise for example – takes around 4 – 6 weeks.

The final results of surgery however – when the tissues have settled in their new position and the scars have faded fully – is usually around one year after the procedure.

Typically however most patients feel happy with their outcome after the first few weeks. Then it just keeps getting better and better.

How Long Do The Results Last?

The results of a deep plane face and neck lift are permanent. When the skin has been removed and the tissues repositioned, your face will always look better than if you had never had the procedure.

Your face will, of course, continue to age. However, we recommend maintaining the outcome of your surgery with non-surgical procedures so that your surgery is a once in a lifetime event.

What Other Procedures Can This Procedure Be Combined With?

A facelift is often combined with eyelid surgery to lift and open the eyes, although it depends on the needs of each patient. Most patients who need tissue removed from a facelift would also benefit from some volume replacement to restore the youthful softness of the face. Likewise, many patients also chose to undergo cosmetic laser treatments to improve the health and vitality of the skin.

We also offer a wide range of non-surgical facelift treatments at our clinic in Glasgow.

What Are The Potential Risks & Complications?

Like any operation, there is a risk of side effects and complications with a facelift and it’s important that all of our patients understand that.

The most common complications are quite minor and self limiting and do not impact the final outcome of the procedure. There is a possibility of a collection of blood-forming under the surface of the skin – known as a haematoma – which could necessitate further treatment to drain it. There is also a small risk of wounds becoming infected, especially in patients who smoke, which would need treatment with antibiotics.

In rare situations, there can be damage to the facial nerve, which controls the movement of the face. In most cases this is temporary and resolved over a period of weeks or months. In very rare cases, this can be permanent although thankfully this is not something that has ever happened in our patients.

IS THERE A NON-SURGICAL ALTERNATIVE TO A SURGICAL FACELIFT?

We offer a non-surgical facelift that is a combination of procedures that restore volume, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and tighten loose or sagging skin around the face and neck area.

Another option is a volumetric facelift. This involves facial fillers being injected into the facial tissue and on top of the bone.

A third option is Profound RF. This procedure stimulates a healing response that generates new collagen formation. This further stimulates the production of elastin and hyaluronic acid – two vital components of youthful skin.
