Our vascular surgery service is led by Dr Alex Vesey (GMC 6097539), FRCS and a Specialist Registered surgeon with a PhD in Cardiovascular Science. Alex is a highly skilled vascular surgeon with extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of vascular conditions. With a focus on minimally invasive techniques, Dr Vesey is dedicated to providing patients with the most advanced and effective treatments for venous diseases, with a particular interest in the treatment of varicose veins.

Background

Dr Vesey qualified in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 2004 and completed his surgical training at leading academic centres across the UK and France. Alongside his medical degree, he earned a PhD in Cardiovascular Science through the British Heart Foundation Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Edinburgh, with research funded by the British Heart Foundation and the Chest, Heart and Stroke Association. His doctoral work focused on advanced imaging techniques for identifying high-risk atherosclerotic plaques, contributing to earlier detection of cardiovascular disease. Dr Vesey joined McKeown Medical in 2024 to lead the clinic’s newly launched vascular surgery service, which became the first in Scotland to offer VenaSeal for varicose vein treatment.

Known for his compassionate approach and meticulous surgical skills, Dr Vesey is deeply committed to patient care. He works closely with each patient to develop personalised treatment plans that best suit their needs, ensuring optimal outcomes and improving quality of life. At McKeown Medical, he heads up the varicose vein team and offers a full range of minimally invasive vein treatments including VenaSeal, radiofrequency ablation, foam sclerotherapy, and microphlebectomy.

Awards & Recognition

Dr Alex Vesey is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and has been on the GMC Specialist Register since August 2018, with GMC-recognised trainer status as a clinical supervisor, educational supervisor, and undergraduate training coordinator. He holds a PhD in Cardiovascular Science from the University of Edinburgh, completed as a British Heart Foundation-funded research fellow at the BHF Centre for Cardiovascular Science. Throughout his career, he has contributed to the development of the specialty through continuous research and education, with more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles published across leading vascular and cardiovascular journals. At McKeown Medical, he leads Scotland’s first VenaSeal vascular service, offering patients access to treatments not routinely available elsewhere in the country.

Dr Alex Vesey was featured in Wellbeing Magazine in October 2024 announcing the launch of McKeown Medical’s vascular surgery service, the first facility in Scotland to offer VenaSeal for varicose vein treatment. In the article, Dr Vesey spoke about the pressures facing NHS vascular care and the importance of bringing innovative, minimally invasive treatments into private practice. His academic work has been published across more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles, including in the Journal of Vascular Diagnostics and through collaborations at the British Heart Foundation Centre for Cardiovascular Science at the University of Edinburgh.
